TBH I think Abrams is talented, it's just the flaws in his general style have become so apparent due to how influential he is within the industry. IIRC Tom Cruise hired him to direct Mission: Impossible III because he was impressed with the action in Alias, and then everything just ballooned from there. Not helped by Abrams having directed a grand total of one film not part of a franchise and even that was basically a proto-Stranger Things. Also huh Abrams sure likes his action heroines, can't say I'm complaining though.
