One possibility people have suggested that I could see being likely is that he was planning on leaving soon (perhaps publicly announced at the end of "E3 week" as other staff members have done in the past) and when he told Red Ventures they decided instead to just terminate him that day rather than let him have his week or two weeks or whatever length of time

It clearly wasn't a completely sudden and unexpected departure to the site's staff, I don't think he had to be hastily edited out of that "seance" video for example.
