Maybe you view people more positively than me, but I don't think most of the people that like Trump had to be convinced on what they want to hear by him at all. He was just the first to openly be willing to say it, which, to be fair, is a form of charisma. I'm not saying he's utterly devoid of the stuff, just not special.
If someone like Ted Cruz had said the same things as Trump, it would've been 1/10 as effective. Trump somehow has the ability to make the lowest common denominator think they're just like them. Probably because he has the overconfident swagger of a manchild who doesn't know better - which yes, resonates with quite a few people in the US, white males especially. To them, Ted Cruz is always going to be a suit, no matter what he says. Trump is 'relatable'. So when Trump says what they want to hear, they actually believe that he believes what he's saying.
