I have a Ruger revolver. My wife has a S&W handgun. She purchased both (mine was a graduation present but my first choice - we had discussed this heavily) at a large gun show. They have state police on site to conduct background checks. We also certified for CCW through a local range/instructor, then applied for the CCW license through the Court. I actually let my license expire and I'm waiting for it to come back from the court right now.

We almost never conceal carry, but we do like to have them while traveling - the permit makes driving with a concealed weapon much less of a hassle. Our state has reciprocity with most of the ones we'd ever travel through, and when we travel through or to the ones that don't (Maryland, in particular), we just don't carry on those trips.

We are both very well-trained and practiced, though I expect mine would probably suffer a cleaning about now. We expected to teach our children about guns and how to handle them safely - they're not quite at the level of maturity we are hoping to see before we give them more than barest basics, but they do know those. Always assume it's loaded, never touch one without mom or dad, go get an adult you trust right away if you see one.
