How will you know who to vote for if you don't have an ad campaign funded by big corporations? Will you listen to the hundreds of thousands who try to be president? Alternatively, a self made rich person could afford to fund their own campaign and reach your attention.
In my perfect world we would do all voting through a website on specific issues and replace the need for a lot of politicians. So there would be a guy with 100 followers Vs 100,000 followers, that makes your choice easier.

There come complications with that but mainly yeah keeping trust fund kids from buying success is a huge challenge in all governments and it's rarely successful.

I think what helps is keeping the issues very specific. "Legalize weed" is going to sell more than "vote Joe Biden", obviously the same way with gun regulations. You can run a financed campaign against weed, but it makes it harder when you spread them out. Also, who knows if X politician will even do what you want and legalize weed? It's like a 50/50 shot.
