I mean, not that Ukraine wouldn't obviously become favourites anyway with global events, but not for nothing their song is legit one of the best ones in it, and probably should be in with a huge chance to win it no matter what.

But even so, this is like a perfect storm where the song deserves to win and the country getting a win right now would be the ultimate feel good moment - it's like Ukraine should win andtheir entry should win. It's gonna be an epic moment.

Anyone who's annoyed by that can fuck off, tbh. Eurovision was basically started by a broadcasting union aimed at bringing Europe together not long after WW2. It was always meant to be a display of solidarity and using music as a way of bringing the people of Europe together even if politics of their nations brings them apart, and fucking hell - if people always complain (at least here in the UK where we seem to have a hard time accepting that we're just shit, haha) that it's become a political vote, then fuck it, let's use that political vote to be kind for once - if you have a problem with people using the Eurovision song contest to say that as a continent we stand side by side with people who need a friend right now, then you kinda miss the entire fucking point of the evening.

Yes - putting aside the fact that they probably would win anyway - Ukraine winning would be oversentimental. Yes it's a bit twee. No, it's not ultimately going to change the reality of their situation. But that doesn't mean that it's not a big deal.

In the smallest possible way, tonight the average person across Europe gets to put in their vote and say that, yeah, this is only a silly singing competition, and yeah usually we watch this to see the weirdo dressed in tinfoil, or the fat middle-aged Gazza lookalike rap about being in school, but tonight we're using it to say that for what it's worth, we've got your back. Everyone tuning in this evening is saying that for one night only we're a little bit Ukrainian, and while ultimately that doesn't matter, it also matters. Sometimes doing something in the smallest possible way is the biggest thing you can do.

Let them have their moment. Christ knows they fucking deserve it.

Plus, like I said, their song is a genuine banger.
