I'm not saying their lives were so much better and that I would love to be transported to medieval Europe without comforts of modern life. But the concept of trading time for labor, where idleness at a job is a sin and you get rewarded for sitting at your workplace when there isn't even actual work to be done at that moment, is definitely modern.
