This is my problem with politics in general is I have more in common with a very nuanced, highly intelligent slightly conservative person (say lotm) than I do a braindead very progressive person! Like anyone who just screeches at the typical conservative voter (note voter not media etc) that they are the worst full stop has no understanding of how we got here.

While they lack understanding, the reason is they do not care. They do not care if any of their side's goals are achieved so there is no need to gain understanding. All they really want is the opportunity to exercise power over others.
