Kirby: Star Allies (Switch)
Alright, so I can understand the hate but it's not that bad. There are two sticking points, the length and multiplayer. The game doesn't feel horribly short due to a reasonable number of bosses and stages, but a mere 4 overworld areas doesn't give the best of impressions. And at its core it's a reliable implementation of the Kirby formula with some fun new abilities and action platformer setpieces. The various combo powers are once again cool, although it's not always intuitive what goes with what because the system is complicated and inconsistent. But it really does seem designed for multiplayer. When soloing it felt like soloing Zelda Four Swords or something. You can do it, the game makes it possible, but unless you're determined to beat the game you probably shouldn't. The AI can manage what is needed of it well enough but is still more than a little stupid. And boss fights devolve into chaos, everyone attacking at once with flashy moves, to the extent that I sometimes lost track of Kirby's position. I might say it felt like always having three Spirit Ashes summoned in Elden Ring but even that would only be too one-sided and not a damn mess. It seems like there's still some good postgame content here but of the two problems, design may actually be the bigger one.
