Dogs actually understand you:

Some owners of disobedient dogs may have trouble believing this, but dogs can learn to recognize a vocabulary of about 165 words. Unsurprisingly, dogs respond best to short words, as well as words with hard consonants like "t" or "r," which may explain why they can hear "treat" from three rooms away. If you want to try to expand your dog's vocabulary, be consistentfor example, always call a meal "dinner" instead of breakfast, lunch, or supper. And don't believe the myth: Old dogs can learn words just as well as young dogs

One time my wife heard a noise outside our window at night. Dog got agitated. My wife got up to look and saw a raccoon, waved at it, and said "hi cutie!"

A fucking YEAR later, we were cuddling the dog at night. He went and jumped into some blankets and then popped his head out and my wife said "hi cutie!" to him.

Total personality change. He started growling and running around the house. Took some thinking before we figured out what must have happened.
