They lost the first play-off to North Macedonia 0-1 after conceding a goal in the closing minutes of the game. Had Italy won, they would have went up against Portugal in the second qualifier match. This marks the second consectutive World Cup Italy have failed to qualify for (having missed out in 2018 to Sweden).
