It would, but I'm having trouble seeing how all of this resolves differently. I can't see Putin willingly withdrawing his forces and I can't see him getting overthrown or the military collectively defecting from his government. He has few options other than to try and quickly force a ceasefire and if you can't do that by crippling Ukraine's military his only other option is MAD.

Even if Russia is defeated and cuts an unfavorable treaty, Putin isn't going to let it get that far unless he can claim some kind of victory in the process. He'll want to frame it as some form of mission accomplished.

My fear is that the number of things that he can claim victory over is rapidly shrinking without the use of larger munitions and casualties.
