I got sucked so far down into a Wikipedia hole about the Iran vs. Iraq war a while back. It was the closest thing we had to a full scale modern war between two relatively even sides, I found it fascinating from a perspective of "what if we had another world war without nukes coming into play".
It's interesting to study but you have to be careful about what conclusions get drawn from it because neither side was competent in their management of the war or equipment they used. Saddam's military's training was almost purely ideological since he was a believer in the idea that you were either born a warrior or not so the most important thing was ideology and technology. Which made his material and technological advantage moot.

I mean the Iraqis essentially wasted their armor divisions First Battle of Khorramshahr by sending them into the city without infantry support. Plus neither side had the infrastructure to sustain any sort of offensive which is why every time a breakthrough occured they eventually bogged down and turned into a slugfest.
