What would happen is Russia agresses to take the Baltics and other areas that used to be in the USSR. We know this because they have literally said they want all these areas on record. Then Europe would get into a big war and our economy would feel all kinds of effects. Whereas now, we can flex our muscles and possibly prevent further aggression; not to mention prevent a giant war where half the world kills each other.
