It would be fine for Yoshi to protect a baby Yoshi, a prince from a far away kingdom, etc. But I think Mario was better when he was someone from Earth trapped in the Mushroom Kingdom instead of someone born into the Mushroom Kingdom. I suppose Mario canonically being an actor was inevitable. There was no way that they could reconcile him going after apes in construction sites, rescuing princesses from dragons and aliens, go-karting, being a doctor, etc., but I think the basic Alice in Wonderland approach of a person trapped in a fantasy world is a better premise than a baby hero who is fated to grow up to fight the Koopas and seems to be one of about five or six human characters in the entirety of the Mushroom Kingdom. ...
