He purg'd them at first, and only changed it to a ban after multiple topics hounding him about the decision. Of note, I was one of the people in those topics calling him out, including that when he said "no moderators have disagreed" I was the first to link to posts where moderators had disagreed with it (which he then played off as "well I didn't read [the topic where I was tagged multiple times about this], the moderators should've contacted me directly" - which we'll never have any way of knowing if they did or not). Definitely doesn't escape my notice that this bullshit suspension + purg happened not long after that episode. At least one other person calling him out was banned in that topic for posts that, while genuinley moddable, are ridiculous to see as worthy of anything more than an NKL, maybe a warning if there's a lot of history.
