I've heard that this is not like Octopath though where you can go through each character's story in a single playthrough. Is each character's campaign in this like a full-length RPG, or do they add up to one?

Live a Live is a really unique game, especially for it's time. Each character doesn't just has it's own campaign but there's even drastic gameplay differences between them. Like modern time's is basically a Mega Man like stage select with Street Fighter clone parody opponents and you copy their moves when hit by certain attacks like in Breath of Fire 3, and far future is basically a survival horror with no battles at all until the final boss of that chapter (well there is an arcade machine but it's just for fun) Western time is where you make a bunch of home alone like traps to try and reduce the amount of enemies in the last fight ect. Some are kinda standard like the Prehistoric and near future but those still have their own gimmicks.
