They gave Double Fine much more funds and let them delay the game for a couple of years. This allowed them to include everything they wanted to do within the game including boss fights.

It's much easier to make a game for a giant corporation who says yes than stretching out every dollar from a crowdfunding campaign. Which is how Double Fine had been working for years
