Well, the saber was used on the battlefield more than the rapier because it could be used from horse back easier. You aren't going to be using a rapier on horseback. The rapier was a popular sidearm for infantry before gunpowder & extremely popular for civilian use.

The rapier is extremely long range for a one handed sword. Probably the longest one handed sword you are going to find. Actually, makes it a bit difficult to wield without proper training, since it is pretty heavy and you tend to hold it in front of you instead of close to your body.

The rapier is almost purely a trusting weapon, so there is very few other concerns. You can cut a person with it, but it won't lop off a limb like say a long sword would. Although, I am preferential to the trust since you can keep your distance and be in less danger compared to a chopping weapon where you have to close the distance & may die doing so. There is nothing wrong with having one attack mode. The spear is in a similar situation and is quite strong.

Saber is a pretty good balanced weapon I will agree with that. I could understand why some may prefer it, but I still would want the extra reach for a dual like situation.
