Think about it. You scout out certain Pokemon and train them up in competitive fights against other teams of Pokemon. There are tournaments and Cups in which you can enter your Pokemon team to compete against others, you can go up against league champions if you perform well enough, and you can even give your Pokemon performance enhancing items such as X Attack and Rare Candy to boost certain aspects of their skills. There are even minigames in certain titles where Pokemon compete in a certain sport such as the "Run, Rattata, Run" minigame in Pokemon Stadium that has Rattata jump hurdles in a race.
