Nujabes - Metaphorical Music

All in one handy-dandy video!

@rwlh

I've seen Nujabes mentioned around a ton, and I guess I completely had no idea what they sounded like.

I can't help but be disappointed by the first song. Not about the rapping--I think it fits the mood perfectly and I'm not put off by it at all here--but about the common ailment of songs focusing on rap vocals: boring instrumentals. A looping two-bar piano phrase is definitely not my idea of compelling music, and the horn that was prominent early also took a backseat and kind of faded away. Weirdly enough, I don't think that the vocals are even focused on that much. The timbres of the song kind of make everything fade away, vocals included, so my impression of the song is just a repetitive blob.

Horn in the Middle is much better, with the sampled breakdown halfway through it. This songs a lot more like prototypical rwlh music. Here, the repeated bassline does help to accentuate the variance present elsewhere in the song, rather than make the whole song nothing.

I had high hopes for the fifth song, but it too turned out to be plagued by two-phrase piano syndrome. I guess my opinion from it went from High 2 Low.

I did laugh when the background guy responded to "Is the glass half full or empty?" with "Stop asking that. I dunno man" in Think Different

Next View is definitely the best so far. I'm sure you were hoping I'd really connect with some of the stuff earlier, but it's definitely the safe bet for what I'd like the most. I was just thinking about how I keep comparing things to Frums too much and it doesn't fit here as well as I would personally think it does, and then there was the UNDENIABLY Wavetapper-esque sample.

Latitude is very interesting melange of things you'd think would go together pretty commonly but I haven't heard too often, at least in regards to the mood. The chill and developed instrumental with the aggressive (yet not grating) sampling works super well. I can't tell which parts are conventional and which aren't

An album that is pretty different from things I've heard before, so I've got a lot to say. I can definitely appreciate the vibe it's going for, which, similar to the Pat Metheny album, isn't perfect for rankings where I am (in theory) actively listening to the music. As I've mentioned, heavily looped music of a very short duration isn't my thing, so a lot of songs suffer because of that.
Definitely am glad to have listened to this
