is that an 8 track?

never actually seen one in person
Yep.

When I was a kid I had an old hi-fi that had a record player, AM/FM radio, a cassette player, and an 8-track player. I think it might have been this exact model:

8-track tapes are a single continuous loop so you never have to flip them over or rewind. The ends of the tape are spliced together with foil tape, which also acts as a signal to the player to let it know it's gone all the way around.

The tape is recorded with 8 tracks, so there are 4 stereo pairs. You start out playing the first pair of tracks, then when the tape reaches the foil splice, the switches to the next pair of tracks. It does this every time the tape goes around, then at the end of the fourth program it switches back to the first.
