Ymir was literally on fire and papa got lit up with a machine gun but somehow everything is mostly fine the next day save for some broken barrels. It looked a lot worse than it was, much like when the dragon landed on Bose in SC. I can now buy and upgrade weapons, exchange items, make quartz, and enhance my slots. This is a good time to mention I dont really like what they did separating attributes and arts but Ill get used to it I guess. It didnt bother me in CS1, but I hadnt played the earlier games yet. Also you can upgrade equipped weapons bless. Toval is cool so Im glad hes sticking around.

As we set off on our adventure, Rean asks the question thats been on my mind: What are Vitas motives? Celine doesnt know either, so I feel vindicated. To be honest after 6 games I still dont know what the Society is going for. Anyway, Valimar knows my friends are not ded (yay!) and roughly where they are, so thats convenient. Apparently since they helped with the trials they are kind of involved in the contract somehow? I was all ready for an epic adventure walking around the empire, getting the band back together but we can just teleport instead. Whatever happened to the journey being more important than the destination, the joy of adventure!? Its kind of weird that this teleporting thing has never been mentioned before, but what can you do? At this point, Im wondering how they will incorporate Bracer-esque missions with this structure, cause you know they will find a way.

We land in a Nature Preserve I have hardly any memory of. Note to self: dont wait three years to play CS3. Didnt have much trouble getting through the park but there were some tough enemies near the end. I never really used the Quartz to raise accuracy but good lord my characters are missing a lot. Im not sure if I need to be scanning enemies or if the info fills in as you kill more of each enemy, but I am conditioned to analyze everything thanks to Crossbell. When we get to the boss, Rean and Toval start glowing and a brand new mechanic called Overrise is introduced, AKA definitely not Overdrive. Its like Overdrive from Azure but only for the characters that are linked. It was kind of whack that it made me use it at the beginning when I was at full health, and I ended up dying on the first attempt because he hits hard and can heal himself, so its hard to keep up with healing and ding enough damage. On retry, it lets you save Overrise which actually came in clutch, as it let me finish him off before he could heal again.

After exiting the park, we find a house and pose as merchants to get some info. Celdic isnt too bad at the moment, so thats a relief. Toval is a bro and encourages Rean to check out Trista as its clearly distracting him. Of course, its not that easy and there is a checkpoint in the way, with tanks and magic golems so we better bail. Toval said it takes about 3 hours to get to Trista from Celdic, so I wonder how much time they wasted going out there!

Side note: I like the fishing mechanics way better than the single button press version, but I wish the bait system was the same. It would be a good combination of both.

Anyway, we finally proceed to Celdic and start looking for clues. Immediately we find a fellow student, Becky, who may as well be speaking another language. But I managed to find out that Hugo Tubman secured an evacuation route to help student get out, but she doesnt know where he is now. She also tells me another Thors student is at the church, which I promptly checked out and found no one. So I went to the market and found a nun getting hit on by the guards, one of whom is clearly drunk. She tells him she is underage which is obviously futile in the great land of Erebonia, but luckily theres a Bracer to defuse the situation. Turns out these guards are pretty scummy and just get wasted during the day and break stuff.

After talking to everyone around town, a pushy boy selling newspapers starts shoving it in Reans face. Rean is a pushover and instantly succumbs to the pressure, but it can help them get an idea of the current situation so why not? The Nobles are clearly in control of the paper, but there is still some useful information in here, namely that Machiass dad was arrested and that transportation is being highly restricted (too real btw). Before finishing up with the paper, the gang notices a note which is actually a map of the East Celdic Highway with some letters and a riddle on the back side. It seems to be a grid with the letters Q, P, B, R, and N.

...N!?

It took me a second to process that this was a chessboard and the N was for Knight (whoops). I assume they fixed that in the localization but it got a good chuckle out of me. Toval remarks that its Bleublanc-esque, which was my thoughts too, but Rean makes a good point that nothing was stolen (although the key could have been stolen). After all that, I exited town and theres a mark on my mini-map exactly where Im supposed to go! Um thanks? That kind of defeats the point of the riddle! After I find the key, theres another riddle for where to use it once again marked on the map. For shame...
