And his approachable appearance certainly did play a contributing role. His compulsion is what really did him in. Instead of abusing his image and deviant charm to lure in just a short hit list and be done with it (something that most people could never pull off), he kept going and inevitably drew attention to his terrifying predatory nature. Some people can still find a violent and cruel person charismatic...even redeemable. However, the alarming image of a bloodthirsty monster is generally less enchanting.
