I think Metallo would make a great starter opponent in a movie trilogy since he's technically not as strong as Superman while still possessing abilities which make him a threat to the Man of Steel. It provides a challenge while still highlighting Superman's strength. They could probabaly think of a villain with more creative abilitya to challenged superman then lazily just giving the bad guy kryptonite.
