This is interesting, since the style of singing is of a type that I generally have an automatic adverse reaction to, one of the tropes of modern pop or alt rock I dislike, yet it's being used in a very different way that isn't immediately upsetting me. This album definitely has aspects I don't like, don't get me wrong. Mid-song rapping is definitely another cliche I hate. But it's also not bothering me so much. I can't stress enough how odd it is to me that I don't find myself wanting to turn this off. It's like Amy Winehouse as a modern act, with the associated baggage. I can't stand Amy Winehouse. It doesn't seem that you can attribute this to the songs being "non-offensive" or anything, either, because that's never stopped me before. Maybe I just unconciously associate chill music like this with smoking with my friends at school. In any case, I think Cokes win the prize for succeeding where HDT failed. A disclaimer: the music is succeeding in spite of these obstacles. Most enjoyment I get from this is when I'm listening around the rap, or some sections where the singing does get on my nerves. It's kind of like Colors in that regard, with lower highs, and, remarkably, higher lows. For the most part, I wouldn't say that this is something I'd want to actively listen to barring strange moods, but I wouldn't mind at all if most of these songs came on the radio or something. Definitely far better than most things I'd hear a lot of my friends play. I might save a few songs.
