This happens when a unit with very low defense also has defense reducing in combat debuffs that push the stat below 0. Most of the time it is counted as 0 defense. As in a 50 Atk hit into a unit with -10 Defense still only does 50 damage. One exception is Moonlight Bangle. Using Luna, Moonlight Bangle will take 40% of that -10 Defense and subtract 4 damage. So a normal hit does 50 and if Luna activates, the attack now does 46. --- My bracket looked like random picks compared to his.
