The Korean War stuff definitely draws in those ties to the Forrest Gump resemblance that some of the others have mentioned, though Forrest Gump was definitely handled much better (with every Asian character basically being a joke and ultimately nothing being gained or lost because of the war).

For me, it was more of the coming-of-age narration style that resembled Forrest Gump. Gump was a more grounded movie, for sure. Other movies like this are Benjamin Button, Life of Pi, and I guess The Notebook to some degree. They all have that same feel.
