Final Fantasy IX (PS4)

Another Final Fantasy game played and beaten after I, III (DS), IV, X, X-2, XII, XIII and XV. Still have quite a few left (am some way into V and have gotten similarly far into VI in the past), and while I may not play all of them in the end, there are still a few bucket list titles remaining (mainly VI).

Anyway, I already owned FFIX on PS3, but found it unbearably slow. The PS4 enhancements made it a faaaar less tedious experience and overall it's a fantastic Final Fantasy. Battles and animations still feel slow, especially magic, summons and Trance, but at least I can speed it up now. There were moments I found the gameplay itself quite unappealing, but it's still manageable.

It's not at the top for me, but this game comes together as something larger than the sum of its parts. I was still teary-eyed at the final cutscenes. I love how these characters are not your typical, grandiose exaggerations, but relatable, showing both the joys and hardships of life but in a subtle way. You can see their humanity aside from their assigned roles and character tropes. The little ATE's really helped to convey that as well. I felt FFIX was at its best when it was keeping things small. Basically, it was very cute. Also, the cutscenes were amazing and delivered at precisely the right moments. And the theme for Terra, Dark Messenger and Melodies of Life give me absolute chills.
