In fact XIII might be less linear since at one point the world does open up for some exploration. There was almost none of that in FFX. The story, while good, can be kind of confusing at times so you'll definitely want to read the little journal thing in the game that helps explain some stuff better. I will admit the character Hope was extremely annoying. And Vanille's voice got to me at times. However, Fang, Sazh, Lightning, and Snow were all great characters. I never got the hate for hope. I won't argue hes a great character. But he was ok. Sazh though is one of my favorite FF characters --- Cid- "looks like that overgrown lobster just got served!"
