The story is more similar to the barebones aspects of SMT, except hidden behind a bright and colorful idol veneer. In other words, the Persona games are much better in terms of story. It's not even the idol aspects that are the most at fault (though it is definitely cringey); it's just bad pacing/plotting/dialogue the entire way through.
