The practical differences I've seen:
* VTSAX is a mutual fund. You have to buy in with $3000, and when you put an order in, it only executes after market close that day. After you've bought in, you can continue to buy with as much or as little as you want.
* With VTI, you just buy shares like any other stock.
Yeah I've looked into mutual funds and etf differences before and I just don't know that it matters much for a retirement fund you just put money in every month at the same time. I guess if you want to trade at current price them go etf.

I compared a few vanguard funds and found no difference in performance or fees (maybe a .01% difference if any)
