The mouth thing I can overlook a bit as just a fear inducing thing for he sake of movie horror. (even though I am not sure how it helps anything, especially food down throat digestion. (lets not even get into how fast they magically grow after bursting from a fully living human that they only rip apart uselessly, or what they are eating between humans... which they often just murder and not eat?)

The long head MIGHT have been useful if the retracto mouth was reasonably longer. But that doesn't seem to be considered.

I still can't really forgive the back spike things. The reason being it totally doesn't look like it helps anything when I have seen cosplay xenos. Looks cumbersome.

It even gets in the way of the long head.

AND, worst of all, it would be totally annoying when climbing through tight shafts to get around a ship or at pesky escaping humans.

I just bothers me :p

My best explanation is that they need those to extrude hive building material? Hives don't construct themselves.

Doesn't quite work for an explanation but ... Long standing pet peeve. Meh.
Eh

I love your idea about the relationship between the mouth & head. Its entirely possible that the head contains larva which the Xenomorph was supposed to have been able to implant, or is otherwise related to its intelligence & ability to communicate with the hive or utilize hyper-sensory functions. I would also imagine that the head produces digestive fluid & acid, while the organs of the thorax are related more closely to supplying energy that powers its superhuman physique.

Another idea is that it has 2 brains. 1 copy of the human host to syphon memories from & learn off of, and another fully formed Xenomorph brain that controls it.

in almost every other depiction of the Alien creature besides the corporate syndication sequels, they have been associated with gods & a godlike intelligence.

On that note, I do stand by what I said.... that the features of the Xenomorph are directly related to the facehugger DNA. The throat-tube became the 2nd mouth, the tail became the tail, and the extra arms of the Spider-like facehugger became the appendages on its back.

In the first Alien, we actually see that it encases the captain in hive material, so thats possibly what the things on its back can do. Exactly. Forming the Queen carapace as I put it.

Another possibility as stated is that they are rudimentary wings & likewise its possible the large head is related to dormant ancestral human DNA which the Xenomorph utilizes. As far as moving through vents, I really dont think thats the Xenomorphs intended environment.... but they could actually be malleable instead of rigid as depicted or its feasible that the Xenomorph could collapse or retract them back inside. Another thing that we dont see from the original film is whether or not the Alien got to its final metamorphosis. I believe several things in Prometheus & Covenant imply that Scott & Giger imagined of it taking newer, higher forms beyond the standard Xenomorph.

another idea

Is that they are for intimidation. Many creatures have large protrusions which they use to scare other animals away.

They could also signify rank & standing to other Xenomorphs

  • Or, in attack/prowling stance, it forms a cage that protects the head & can excrete acid in case someone gets on its back.
  • its possible that the Xenomorph would be able to jettison its back-tubes to crawl in right spaces or simply form without them.
  • I am convinced that Xenomorphs eat metal. Theres nothing else on the ship that it could have used to gain sustenance.

actually, haha, partially inspired by the Thing here.... I love the idea of Xenomorphs violently reducing their body size to get through tight spaces, then regrowing everything once it gets on the other side. That way brings back flashes of the Newborns death. Or even reshaping its body as needed, recalling its bio-mechanical design. So, elongating & stretching itself. Etc. also, the large head may help reduce death by cranial injury if it has an array of duplicate neurons & lobes in case some become damaged.

Id love it if it had a third brain too, located in the thorax, so even if you decapitate the Xenomorph.... it can continue to attack & possibly even reform its head. So, in that way, the things on its back could be a set of secondary sensory organs too.
