The pension was created because a president (Hoover) was on the verge of being thrown out for being broke. Presidents have supplemented the pension with speeches etc. as soon as they could. Just because Obama can get more per speech than Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 and others is no reason to throw the baby out with the water.
