This is about as good as it gets for how to do a remake (haven't played FF7 yet)
It's funny, I played Trials of Mana and FF7:R back to back and it felt like a Goofus and Gallant comic. Trials of Mana was one of the best remakes (in terms of how it was faithful to the source material, while still modernizing it and improving the mechanics to make a fun game) I'd ever played. It is a sin that this game didn't get a bit of a bigger budget, as it could have been legendary instead of just very good.

By contrast, FF7:R was a game that, to me, felt like all flash and no substance, where they tacked on a bunch of extraneous shit to a segment of a game that had been teased out to be way longer than it should have been. Whenever the game actually got out of its own way, pulled its head out of its ass and got around to being a game (which was usually the parts of the game that were in the original), it was fantastic, but there was so much fluff in between that it was an absolute chore to play through.

Dunkey had probably the most accurate review of the game I've seen to date: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Qlf3b9wa4s
