But yeah generally speaking, you're right - being a lecturer doesn't command nearly the same pay or prestige as being a tenured professor who produces research, so it may not be a "dream" for most career academics (though I've never been one of those anyway). A PhD is necessary for the latter, and that's a huge barrier to entry for many people (many also do prefer teaching to research, despite the enormous pay difference). I had several teachers in community college who left professor positions at prestigious universities because they wanted to focus more on teaching than research.
