Heres the thing: the vast majority of Sherlock Holmes stories are in the public domain, the exception is six stories from the last book, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, to be exact The Adventure of the Three Gables, The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier, The Adventure of the Lions Mane and The Adventure of the Retired Colourman which expire on Jan 1 2022, and The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger and The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place which expire on Jan 1 2023. You can use Holmes and any of the other stories. However, any elements from the copyrighted stories cannot be used and the Doyle estate argue that this extends as far as Holmes being emotional, saying that this started there. I also heard that elements from at least one of these stories (I think Lions Mane but am not sure) are in the game. So thats why you might change the main character names but not the titles of the books and so on. This would be US only, everywhere else they are all already in the public domain I think.
