That would drive me insane Yeah, but honestly it rarely happens after the beginning of the game, even in the NES version. It's really not a problem unless you plan to min max everything, and then it's still avoidable by just rotating your stat upgrades. And yeah for FF1 I highly recommend Origins, though it's possible the steam version is actually restoring some of the original elements of the game.
