And as others have said, the rest of the series in general does not compare to the first arc, but the one arc that DOES match the first in quality...was completely removed from the show.

There have been theories as to the cause, but nothing official. The strongest theory in my mind is they were forbidden from showing children using guns on TV, which is featured in basically....almost the entirety of the series after the opening arc. Goldy Pond in particular is full of it. So yeah that fucks up the planning a bit.

There's also the not to surprising factor that the manga was over and the series in general is not built to sell merch, and they no longer had any reason to put in effort.

What we do know is that many members of the staff, including the manga writer themselves, requested that their names be removed from the credits in the last few episodes.

The clip show at the end of the final episodes goes over the entirety of a would be season 3, so these factors combined make it clear that they cut their losses and ran. The studio in question, Cloverworks, has been producing anime that cuts huge swaths of content from the source material for years now, but they've been getting a pass because the shows themselves have generally been very well regarded. Promised Neverland S2 is a blight that they won't recover from for some time, to the point where "what are they going to cut from this" has become the first question asked when Cloverworks is revealed to be on a show. Their most recent series, Shadow House followed this same trend. Good show from what I've watched, but they started cutting stiff very early on, so they haven't bucked their methods.
