I assumed it was like Genie in Aladdin where he has to be near the lamp/in the lamp (in this case exorcists) and can't stray farther than that But Velvet literally just grabbed that kid malakhim from the priest lady with the staff and escaped on a ship, effectively kidnapping him so...
