I mean, it is more old fashioned, bit the parts all still function better than many other more modern platformers that are more complex but not as well put together. The physics, particularly jump physics are the biggest sticking point and I don't think it's because they couldn't make his jump more flexible; it's because making the jump physics more realistic was the trend and there hadn't been the "why not let them change momentum in midair like some kind of impossible nonsense, it works better for the gameplay." revelation that changed everything yet.

When you jumped you were committed, but you could trust how far he would jump, that his behavior was consistent.
