The 3D action (and camera) has been refined and improved upon massively over the last few decades, whereas the side-scrolling action of the original - while lacking in the number of available moves - is at heart not noticeably more "old-fashioned" than any 2D platformer today. Basically, on a gameplay/mechanical level there was less in the original game to go wrong or be bettered, so it has weathered the storm more.
