Super Mario 64

Even when it was new, the magic of Super Mario 64 wore off about two-thirds of the way through the game. The more you complete obstacles, the more missions are just "find the random coins / rings / numbers." You can also see, with the benefit of hindsight, that much of it was empty cubed spaces with the occasional spherical enemy. It's still a great game, especially if you stick to the better levels/missions and go straight for Bowser once you have 70 stars, but trying to 100% the game becomes a chore.

Super Mario Bros. has variety and a kinetic energy about it which never lets up. You could play every level from start to finish and never grow bored.
