I barely actually use anything I learned in college, but that's not really the point. There are still valid reasons to want college grads other than "just because". It's more about are you capable of learning and committing to things that may at times be difficult, rather than everything about what you did learn/go through. You can't really show that by being like "I watched a lot of YouTube videos on the subject" and if you do want to take that approach, you better have some impressive stuff to show.

For me, as crazy as it sounds, it really was easier to spend four years in college rather than make some cool project to show off. It is very hard to get motivated to do a project. I say that from the position of someone who already got the degree and the advantages it entails though. Maybe if that is strictly the option you take it's easier, but you have to really be committed to it and expect it to take up a good portion of your life.

In software now of course they have these boot camps which entail some lighter project work, and they seem to work out for a lot of people, but just anecdotally speaking, I usually see a lot more weaknesses in boot campers vs four year grads
