It doesn't matter that the US is only 40% vaxxed if everyone at your grocery store or gym or party is fully vaxxed. You have local immunity. Same with a scenario where the US is 99% vaxxed. If you're hanging out with the non-vaxxed 1%, then you're still at risk. You can't know with any level of certainty if everyone at your grocery store or gym is fully vaxxed or not.
