That's my thought. He went back on a mad backcheck, and decided that the best course of play would be to play the player, not the puck. He stopped skating at the top of the circles, and glided the rest of the way in - a good 30 feet in less than 3 seconds. This is like the inverse, where you criticise the intent of the play. The intent was a pure hockey play. The result was disaster.

I'm really not so sure about that interpretation honestly, it almost felt like he had given up on the play, he was barely skating and he did sort of lunge at Evans. Don't think he intended to injure, but I feel like he intended that big check whether evans got his empty netter or not. It wasn't a elbow or a deliberate hit to the head, but it was a largely unnecessary play and I don't really buy the "he played the player" call. Scheifele was already pretty frustrated too after that roughing penalty he got.
