Here are my opinions about the lack of interest, as someone who doesn't vote in "user of the year" topics normally. Please don't take any offense:

* "Video game character of the year" is kind of confusing. Are we going to have polls for each year? (best video game character in 1998 vs 1999?) I understand people who vote in the "of the year" polls understand this, but if you want to bring in casuals you might consider rebranding.
* Being able to nominate any video game character from any time period and any gennre is more daunting than it seems. I suggest another topic with a base list of 50 and ask the board to nom characters not on the list. This sounds counter-intuitive, but if you give us a list of "already includeds" people might find the nominating process more interesting.

I actually had some initial confusion when I saw the topic title until reading the instructions. So I think thats a valid point that some casuals might not be realizing what the contest is actually about.

These are good points. I can change the name to something like "Board 8's Best Video Game Character" or something like that going forward. I also did flirt with the idea initially of coming up with a list of characters that were automatically in, but I nixed it because I didn't want to be too subjective with it. If I devoted more time to the idea, I probably could've come up with a decent criteria that I'm happy with. I'm very hesitant to reboot nominations because I don't want to confuse/discourage anybody who has already nominated and moved on. I guess if I could get confirmation from many of the 17 people who've nominated already, I'd be open to it.
