He saved the baby for more money He "rescued" the child because he was rescued as a child and wants to keep the creed going He refused to help the village until he benefited from doing so Paying people for their work is part of his creed. Apparently we're not watching the same show because you seem to not be following the plots or character motivations Mando would have handed the quarry over (as indeed he did) without thought if it was an adult. He would have let the viliage rot if it didn't benefit him to save it He's not a good person, he's completely self-interested in personal gain.
