Okay so, I actually am currently enrolled in college. The student should not face expulsion over this. At worst, she should receive a warning from the Code of Conduct Committee or whomever handles these situations at that university.

People are correct in that you can pretty much say whatever you want on a college campus. That doesnt mean you wont face consequences whatever they may be. If people are offended, they have a right to report you. Every year at my college, we have religious preachers come onto campus and tell everyone that theyre going to Hell for sinning. Its always a huge commotion that draws a large crowd outside. Nobody actually gets offended because who cares what random people shout. Were there to get an education. Not to debate ignorant people. Even some of my professors have said questionable things at times but the students usually just ignore it and stick it out until the class is over for the semester.

Expulsion should only be reserved for the most heinous of things. For example, I met someone who was raped by a fellow student on campus. It took some encouragement and support from myself and few others but she finally reported it and he was expelled. There was another student who was planning to shoot up the school. He was expelled, too. Expulsion is appropriate for situations such as those. I dont think it applies to the student in question unless she went out of her way to harass a specific group of people multiple times. The university should just call her in, talk to her about what she did wrong, makes sure she understand why it was wrong and why people felt offended, and maybe have her issue an apology.

As someone who has had college taken away before due to problems on campus, I cannot wish that upon anyone else. It is very depressing and demoralizing. Expulsion should really be a last resort for dangerous people. The student in question may be ignorant and insensitive but I dont think shes a danger unless theres information we are not aware of.
