Since male and female organisms existed, that's been how it's been classified. Look at how we classify animals. Look how women's and men's health is defined. Women's health doctors focus on breasts, vagina, and reproductive organs. Men's health focus on the penis and balls. The male in any species of animal outside of hermaphrodites is the one that provides the sperm, and the female is the one that carries the eggs.
